Description
Silk has a long and storied history dating back to 2700 BC. It was at this time that the Chinese discovered that the silk thread from one cocoon would range between 500 and 1600 meters long making it the longest natural fiber thread. Under the reign of Cyrus (556-530 BC), the Persians opened the silk trade routes into the Middle east from China establishing the fiber solidly in the weaving, fabric and rug making trades emerging at the time. The beauty if the items manufactured from silk fibers would make it a treasured product from that moment on worldwide.
While it is prized as the strongest natural fiber, it remains firmly entrenched because of its limited supply. It can never meet the general needs of the fabrics industry for this reason and its use in in high value fabrics and production for commercial purposes.
